You say ee-ther and I say i-ther. You say up-market Gentleman's Club with posh VIP lounge and I say Strip Club - cheap, sleazy, seedy environment. Whatever you want to call it - it's a place where the objectification of women is promoted and sanctioned. Seeing as Zac is the HSM guy, who made his name singing sweet songs about love, it was disappointing he didn't see putting a strip-club foray into the public domain - and even making light of it - as inappropriate, considering the demographic of his fan-base.
Honestly, did it not make you question your perception of him - even just a little bit? In my opinion, whether it was his idea to go or not, whether he called Vanessa beforehand or he didn't, it all boils down to the fact that he was content to sit back and watch women taking their clothes off - and was prepared to "rain money" for the privilege. Classy.

Watched MTV Movie Awards last night:

How funny was Aziz Ansari? To be honest, didn't know much - or anything - about the guy, so when I heard he was presenting I was wearing a 'it-should've-been-Russell-Brand-pout' for days (I know, need to expand my life), but, in my opinion, the boy Aziz was kind of just a little awesome, so he gets my vote to return next year!

Was it just me? Or did anyone else notice how nervous-looking Zac Efron was?? It seemed something was bothering him; an itchy suit, perhaps? An uncomfortable chair?...The thought someone was going to mention Charlie St. Cloud...?

And as if this could possibly fail to get a mention... Guys, how utterly bad-ass was Tom Cruise? Loved the way Katie Holmes started off looking all 'Oh, sweet Lord he's going to embarrass Suri!' then had that proud 'That's my man, he's so talented!' cheer at the end. I'm telling you, that routine will go down as an MTV classic! Yeaaahhh, TC!!

But no matter how good an award show may be, there's bound to be the odd dud moment -Kristen Stewart's speech???? ...Yeah, not even gonna go there...

Still, great show, MTV!!

First Alien v Predator Now...

As one writer said, "summer's movie releases just got a little bit more intense." Why? This time last week, Zac's Charlie St. Cloud wasn't being released in the US until October. Then, on Tuesday, it was suddenly announced that things had changed and the film is now set for release on July 30th...the exact same day as Beastly.
The feedback from fans has been mixed: Some are super excited that they get to see Big screen!Zac sooner, but others are concerned that Zac and Vanessa are being pitted against each other, and think that Universal (the studio behind Charlie St. Cloud) have acted selfishly. Personally, I think some perspective is needed here - as I'm guessing, whatever the release date, both Zac and Vanessa will be collecting healthy paychecks. Further, although it's an almost given that actors have huge egos, the relationship should be strong enough to weather the box-office storm. Face it, if this is the thing that can impact on a union, then a couple should never have gotten together in the first place. In any case, considered from a studio angle, this is not such a surprising move: you have two huge names dating, there was always a chance that someone was going to attempt to get mileage out of it; a typical, "wouldn't it be perfect if..." marketing idea.
I, for one, couldn't be happier that the date of CSC has moved up. Hopefully, it means that us in the UK will get the flick sometime before December. I'm intrigued to see who will make the biggest impact at the box office. I think it will be Vanessa, seeing as Beastly has, at this stage, had the most publicity, but who knows...?

Last Song

Last Song: Cheesy and predictable. This is what I thought I'd be saying about this movie, but, actually...I can't. The script was well-written, plenty of summer beach scenes to set the appropriate mood, and on a whole the acting wasn't bad (I particularly loved Bobby Coleman, the actor who played little brother, Jonah). There was, of course, a healthy dose of cheese - I'd expect nothing less from Mr Sparks - but I think that's synonymous with the genre. As for predictability; there are a few elements, but, unless you've read the book, there is definitely one thing that you won't see coming.
So, for me, Last Song was a success. Not quite The Notebook, but it certainly superseded The Timetraveler's Wife and Dear John.

...Oh, and one more thing - bring tissues ;)

Part of me thinks it's completely...absurd, ridiculous, ludicrous, preposterous - take your pick - to pay 300 bucks for a thing like that, but on the other hand, it's not as though she'll ever get through the money she has, so why not?

Would I buy it? I would have to be feeling particularly frivolous, that day. Right now, I'm saying no.

How Much Fun Can You Have On Skates?

Whip It, wasn't a movie that I had any interest in seeing. Women bashing each other in the face while roller skating - what would be the fun in that? But I got the chance to go to a screening, so I figured, hey, there are worse ways to spend a Monday evening...

Directed by Drew Barrymore and starring Ellen Page (Juno), the first fifteen minutes or so of Whip It were... if not quite bad... then decidedly average. It tells the story of small town girl, Bliss Cavendar, trying to exist in the colourless town of Bodeen, (or as one character accurately put it: "Bodeen?Why?") where the dining highlight, at, her place of work, The Oink Joint, is for customers to eat a big burger so as to get an even bigger burger free. Shoe-horned by her mother, into a world of mindless Beauty Pageants, Bliss finds herself yearning for the more exciting, adrenaline-fuelled world of Roller Derby. It is in this world, that Bliss transforms into Babe Ruthless, finds who she is, falls in love and, ultimately, learns some tough life lessons.

Barrymore skilfully various representations of relationships; Bliss' relationship with her parents - specifically, the often tense one with her mother (a beautifully restrained, Marcia Gay Harden); the friendship with best friend, Pash and also the bond Bliss has with her Roller Derby team-mates, who guide her through the sport, while at the same time encouraging her growth as a person. Then, there's her romance with wannabe rock star Oliver. I love, particularly, that the romance here avoided Hollywood cliché, while at the same time giving the audience a wonderfully poetic seduction sequence which captured very well the weightless feeling of first love. What you don't see, however, is a young girl relinquishing her power to some guy in her life - a message I feel the media should put out there more.

Ellen Page, definitely showed her range as an actress. The role of Bliss - if not a complete departure from her Juno character, in that both were equally independent - was one which required a more subtle display of emotions which she does more that competently.

Criticism of this film? Some of the Roller Derby scenes lacked the energy requisite for building anticipation and excitement when heading towards the climax which ties in with my previous comment about pacing, but that said, Whip It is a good watch and Drew Barrymore certainly doesn't disgrace herself, in this, her debut feature.

Who's Bad?

Kick-Ass!

Why don't ordinary individuals become super-heroes? This is the question that tugs at mild mannered almost-but-not-quite-nerdy teen, Dave Lizewski. The unsurprising answer - swiftly and brutally delivered - is that, dude, it is waaay too dangerous; you could end up, for example, dead - or filmed catching a serious a** kicking and plastered over YouTube. And this, just for starters ...For damn sure, this movie is irreverent, cartoonish, completely OTT and one which unashamedly plays to its male audience. But it is also slick, well-written, and superbly acted. A film that, for all its (at times, very) dark humour, does seem to be saying something quite relevant about adult accountability and the potential fall-out when adults fail in allowing kids a childhood. In short: Intelligent and very, very entertaining.

So Erykah Badu decides to go as nature intended for Window Seat, a song from her latest cd, New Amerykah Part Two. Her claim was that she wanted to communicate the 'bare truth' of the lyrics, but some *tentative raise of hand* aren't buying it, and instead hold the opinion that such a display was nothing but a cynical attempt to heighten interest and get more people liking Erykah - 'sexting', sort of, but with a bigger camera. Others, however, are willing to line up behind the argument that this was all about artistic expression...

I'm new into the series - just watched the first episode a few nights ago - so perhaps he will grow on me...buuut I doubt it. It's just snow, people! The world isn't coming to an end, and we aren't heading for the next Ice Age - it's just some frozen rain, 'kay? What a perfect pair: young actress, known across the world, falls for her relatively unknown co-star, who she met on the set of her upcoming - supposedly breakout - movie. Everybody say, "Ahhhh."
...Or another, more realistic, scenario is that Miley needed another guy to get photographed with (the fact that he's older was, no doubt, a bonus - another indication of her blinding maturity, I guess), this guy, Liam, needed to raise his profile and a "real-life" romance could do nothing but help the publicity of their movie.

Maybe I'm just getting incredibly cynical, but I'm seeing the hand prints of the P.R people all over this.

The Time Traveller's Wife AKA Women do the Craziest Things

I watched The Time Traveller's Wife, on dvd last night...and regretted every second of it. Where do you start with a movie as terrible, pathetic, time-wasting and pointless?
The acting? Fair. I used to think that Rachael McAdams (the wife) was a pretty good actress, one to look out for, but watching The Time Traveller's Wife, I wondered whether Ryan Gosling is needed opposite her to pull off a love story: the chemistry between her and Eric Bana (the Time Traveller): ZERO! Eric Bana was...alright. His accent American accent bugged me a little but other than that there was nothing major (in neither a good or bad way) about his performance. The main problem with the film was that I had no sympathy for Rachael McAdam's character. Come on, the woman marries a TIME TRAVELLER and then complains that he's never around - ironic much? Maybe the novel was a heart-wrenching tale of love but as a movie it does not work.
I spent almost two hours of my life watching Eric Bana's clothes collapse in a heap as he time travelled and appeared in another location and decade nude (the reason he was unable to control his travelling or the fact that his clothes never made the journey with him remain unexplained) and so, I'm warning anybody who is inclined to give this film a chance: Don't bother!! Well, if you have any value for your time, that is. If you really want a love story, try the classic Titanic, or maybe the Notebook....anything but this!

Wow.

That isn't a good 'wow', by the way. It's more of a 'I'm-really-hearing-what-I-think-I'm-hearing-wow.' I have three major problems with this: Firstly, as much as I enjoyed the Hannah Montana movie, and, sure, Climb is a good song, it hardly screams 'Serious recording artist', does it? It barely whispers it. Secondly, Joe actually achieved the impossible by being out-sung by Miley Cyrus - at least when she sung it there was some emotion in the words. And finally, couldn't anybody point out that the song was clearly written for a female? Listen to the words, dude, it couldn't be any more of a girls song!

How did Joe end up winning, anyway? Although this was a year of slim-pickings if you ask me. The idea of him being marketed as some crooner is just...laughable . Heartthrob? Please. Joe doesn't even cause a light pitter-patter.

Me and Orson Welles Review

Yes, I've already seen it, and yes, I do feel smug.
It was absolutely amazing. As a huge Zac fan, my expectations for this film were incredibly high and it not only met but exceeded every one of them.

Me and Orson Welles - M&OW to you fangirls ;) - is based on a novel by Robert Kaplow about a young 17 year old, Richard Samuels, who manages to talk his way into a role in the Orson Welles production of Julius Caesar. During the week leading up to the play, Richard [Zefron] not only learns about himself but also about human nature.

When you're doing a film - specifically a period piece based on actual events and adapted from a novel - the cast has to be perfect in order to lift it off of the ground and the acting in this movie was faultless. First off, as Orson Welles, Christian McKay was incredible! You felt compelled to watch him every moment he was on screen; he had a sense of power about him and you felt like you really knew this man by the time the film was over, as opposed to not getting a sense of what Welles was about. Claire Danes, too, was great. Her acting was very understated and subtle but it enticed you - each time she appeared, you were curious to find out more about her, listen to her take on a situation. And Zac? Well, where do I start? ...His performance blew all of his previous ones out of the water. That he was able to hold his own against both Christian and Claire definitely showed his potential as an actor and excited my curiosity to see what he will do in the future (I wonder if he values his down-time? Maybe he wouldn't mind filming constantly and keeping me happy). His character had the right balance of maturity and wide-eyed youthfulness - specifically in his scenes with Sonja [Claire], you see just how young and sometimes clueless he is. The range he showed was more varied than ever before; he was able to be angered and confused, confident but shy, slightly scheming but trustworthy and I was more than impressed.
Also considering the fact that the film takes place over only a week, the cast managed to create a connection with the audience in a way that lesser actors would have failed to do.

If Richard Linklater doesn't deserve recognition during award season then I don't know who does. The way he was able to transform Isle of Man into 1930's NYC was astounding. Not for one second did anything betray their real location. Somehow, you were completely submerged into this film. Particularly in one of the final scenes of the opening night of Orson's production I was...amazed. He managed to bring this piece alive even with showing only a few scenes. When the play ended I pinned my hands to the side of the chair, resisting my urge to clap as the actors took their bows.

If you hadn't planned to see this film, please go and see it and tell everyone you know with you - you will be missing out on this year's best, most intricate film if you don't.

Thwarted by the Osmond

Mya and D'mitry were ROBBED by Donny Osmond. That's right, I said it. Mya and Donny had been incomparable since the start of the season, and yet it was Donny and Kym that walked away with the trophy? ROBBED!
I get that the public votes add another dimension to the show and they also mean that the competition is unpredicatable, but something needs to change in the format so the person most deserving - not the most popular - wins.
I don't even think Donny deserved to be in the final. He completely fluffed his dances in the Semi, but no, Derek and Joanna, who were at the top of the leader board, went out!!!! Where is the justice in that!?!?!

...I guess it pays to be an Osmond.

Who saw Jonas Brothers LIVE in concert on Friday?? ...ME!!!
O.M.G it was just sooo amazing. The energy in the Arena was absolutely unbelievable. I was so excited, I started singing along to their supporting act - a group I'd never heard of - and I'm sure the next time I hear their music, I won't remember a word of it, but knowing you'll be seeing the Jonas Brothers on stage soon can do strange things to a person.

After what felt like a million false alarms, the lights dimmed and JB ran on, high-fiving their band and blood-curdling screams filled the Arena (we JB fans sure do have a set of lungs on us). Everything after that is just so hard to explain! It's all crystal clear in my mind and yet... I can't find the words to describe it and do it justice. I've been attempting to get JB tickets since they first came to London in April '08 (in a venue that seated only 200), and I've missed out every time, and to think that, finally, I've seen them? It's been 5 days and it still hasn't sunk in.

Even though on BTS footage and with their concert movie you saw how much effort went into a show, you still can't really appreciate it until you can actually see them on that stage in front of you, singing, dancing and sweating. It's made me love them so much more -- and many around me thought that impossible. If in ten years, I no longer like Jonas Brothers, I'll always remember what amazing, dedicated performers they were.
I'll never forget that night.

Thanks Mum, for being amazingly, awesome at surprises and thanks JB for caring about us enough to have wanted to send us away with such amazing memories. You DEFINITELY succeeded! :D

At the Me and Orson Welles premier, there were a couple of girls behind me, constantly making snide remarks about Vanessa Hudgens - not that they spoilt my experience, because I don't think anyone could have :) - and it really bothered me. Not just because I like Vanessa, but because I hate to see that side of people. I mean, no matter what mistakes Vanessa - or anyone for that matter - happened to make, how does that effect anybody other than her? Don't get me wrong, I'm not condoning those photos, but it was her choice to take them and that has nothing to do with me. Whether or not you like her films or music is really irrelevant, but I'd prefer having someone make a negative comment about her work - personality even - rather than just out of bitter jealousy.
For example, I have a strong dislike for Miley Cyrus, yet if someone makes a comment about her weight, for instance, I'll choose to stay out of a conversation so petty and immature.
The way I see it, there's enough hate in this world. Why create more?

I'm a proud Twilight fan, not a weird can't-have-a-bad-word-said-against-it psycho fan, just a regular girl that likes the series. I do have one huge problem with it, though. Bella. I could rant for hours on why I hate her, but why do that, when this pretty much sums up my every issue with the girl?

I get that Twilight is a dramatisation of first love but that never stopped me having the urge to slap Bella throughout New Moon and yell at her to 'get a grip,' and I do think it's worrying that girls could be watching it, believing her reaction to be that of a reasonable, rational person. Clearly, I'm not the only person that thought this...phew!

I would disagree with the writer on a few points, though. As it is about a girl who falls madly in love with a 108 year old vamp, I think it's kind of stupid to question how she manages to have a baby for him (not that I didn't find that highly creepy) - obviously, all logic has to get thrown out of the window with these books. Also, Jacob Black is NOT flawed. Yeesh, a guy happens to be descended from Werewolves and suddenly he's a bad guy. He's a good Werewolf, 'kay, so back off Jacob!

Other than that... *cheers wildly* for those non-Bella lovers!

Where to start?? I got to Leicester Square a bit before four. The crowd was already quite big but seeing as they hadn't even laid the carpet yet, I felt as though I was waaaay too early. A little while after, they set out those huge cardboard posters, the lights came on and the carpets were fitted and by the time they started playing the '30's jazz, I started to feel the buzz in the crowd and gradually got more excited.
After two and a bit hours, that famous 'OMG IT'S ZAC EFRON!' scream started to filter down the carpet. I was in a little group right opposite the entrance so we couldn't see him from where we were - talk about torture - but we knew he'd arrived. Finally, after doing the press interviews, he started making his way down the line (he walked the entire length of the carpet) and signing autographs. I first knew he was getting close when a girl next to me said, 'I can't believe I'm actually crying!' - YEP! She was crying! Then, I saw him! He was so close - within touching-distance!!! I could only hear screams and declarations of love and I was being pushed really hard but I was a girl on a mission. I thrust my pink sheet of paper at him between someone's head but he didn't sign it. I didn't give up. I then shoved it at him between a few other heads as he moved further along. I had one hand holding tightly onto my paper and another clicking away trying to get some decent pics when all of a sudden I felt a slight tug on my sheet, looked ahead and he was signing it! My first - first, mind you, - Zefron autograph and oh how I will forever love the scent of a Sharpie*sigh*.
I saw Zac up-close and got an autograph. It can't possibly get better than that, right? WRONG! Once he went inside, I made puppy-dog eyes at one of the security guards and he got me one of the cardboard posters!!
In short, Zac's even more gorgeous than when I saw him at the 17 Again premiere, he was adorably nervous and just kept smiling awkwardly and his suit was simple and crisp...oh and tight ;)
Since Wednesday I've been grinning like a Cheshire cat...and trying to figure out where to place the cardboard poster as it's waaaay too large to hang on my bedroom wall *blush*

If there's any justice in the world, Danyl - with a 'Y' - Johnson will be going home this week on X-Factor. What's with that guy? I never thought it was possible for a person to love themselves so much! His voice, I don't hear anything special about, but that isn't what bugs me - it's the fact he's so self-involved and the tendency he has to go so OTT with a song it's been beaten into the ground by the time he has - finally - ended. Just sing the song and get off the stage!

If there was a line to call to vote people out I'd be using it. I hate his phoniness, his arrogance, the way he waves and pretends to be humble and do you know what I hate more than that? The way the judges keep telling him he's amazing as though God himself has just landed on the stage!

One night, a few weeks ago, I bumped my head while I was sleeping and woke in an alternate universe - a world where Miley didn't seem quite as crazy - I lie, she just seemed a little less crazy when it came it Nick - and Nick actually...liked her again.

The Oscars this year were DEFINITELY the best in years!! ...Some may say I'm biased and that I only enjoyed the show because of Zac and Vanessa's performance, but that's not true...really it isn't!! Though... if they feel like calling them back every year I'd be completely fine with that.
Their performance aside, I do think the show was amazing this year; Hugh Jackman's opening number had me in stitches (especially the part about Benjamin Button) and the dresses were... I LOVED THEM!!! I usually have a list of my favourite five dresses, but this year I found myself extending it - at first to six, then seven, by the end of the night I'd scrapped the idea of numbering the list.

Never, EVER , EVER, go on a tv show-especially one as huge as Jay Leno- and admit that you don't care for personal hygiene (especially when you're hair did look kinda greasy)!! What were you thinking!? You don't go around boasting about that!!!....When the story about Zac Efron not washing came out did he admit it? NO! He had the good sense to deny it!...

So Robert, even if you don't wash, keep that to yourself- because NOBODY wants to know that!!!

Vanessa on DWTS

Remember that E! interview where Vanessa and Ashley were asked if they'd do DWTS? Ashley said that she liked watching it, but Vanessa stayed silent. That's when I first started wonder whether she had been offered a place- so when she turned up to watch the final show my instinct immediately said she'd be on next season.

Then again, celebs usually go on shows like that when they need the publicity and I'm pretty sure that isn't Vanessa's case but I still think there's a very strong chance of her being on the show. If I had a few weeks free, knew I was a good dancer and someone was offering me tons money to dance I wonder what I would do??....Of course I'd do it! Who wouldn't??
